Brain Surgery

At Holy Cross Health in Fort Lauderdale, FL, we understand that patients suffering from brain diseases and injuries are faced with many options regarding brain surgery. This is why we have put together a multidisciplinary team that works together to create an individualized plan of care for every patient that provides maximum benefit utilizing the most technologically advanced facilities and equipment. We treat the common brain conditions as well as the not-so-common conditions such as brain aneurysm, brain cyst and skull-based tumors.

Brain Tumors

Regardless of the form it takes, an adult brain tumor is caused by the formation of abnormal cells in the tissues of the brain. There are more than 100 types of brain tumors with which an adult may be diagnosed.

Tumors may be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). In most cases, benign brain tumors grow and press on neighboring areas of the brain. They don't usually spread to other tissues and rarely return once treated. Cancerous or malignant tumors typically grow quickly and can spread to other tissues in the brain. As the tumor grows and presses against an area of the brain, it may impair brain function. Early detection is important for all cancer diagnoses.

Neuroendovascular Surgery

Neuroendovascular surgery is a specialty within the fields of radiology and neurosurgery. Neuroendovascular surgery is a minimally invasive technique performed by threading catheters through an artery or vein in the leg, allowing the surgeon to diagnose and treat the problem without an incision. This procedure is commonly used to treat neurological diseases and disorders such as arteriovenous malformations, stroke, brain aneurysms, and brain tumors. The advantage of neuroendovascular surgery is a less-invasive approach to the lesion that often translates into shorter recovery times and more effective therapy.

Neuroendovascular procedures include management of intracranial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, tumors, intracranial and extracranial arterial stenoses, and arterial fistulas.

State-of-the-Art Technology

O-Arm with Stealth Station
From diagnostic imaging to surgery, Holy Cross Hospital and its Neuroscience Institute offer leading-edge technology.  Our surgeons utilize the O-Arm with Stealth Station, which allows them to perform minimally invasive image guided cranial surgery-the safest and most precise technique. The Cranial Stealth Navigation System produces highly detailed, 3D visual guidance that is used to aid your surgeon in performing the most accurate and least invasive procedure possible. The images show the surgeon the precise location of surgical instruments and structures in the brain. For the patient, this translates to a reduced risk of injury during surgery and improved chances of fully removing unwanted structure.
